Apple has released iOS 18.3, bringing notable improvements to AI-powered notification summaries and activating Apple Intelligence by default on compatible devices. The update is now available for iPhone 16, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPads and Macs equipped with Apple Silicon.
Following reports of inaccurate headline summaries in news and entertainment apps, including a recent highlight by the BBC, Apple has temporarily suspended notification summaries for these categories. Users will receive a notification once the feature is reinstated.
Apple Intelligence Activated by Default
A key feature of iOS 18.3 is the default activation of Apple Intelligence, Apple’s suite of integrated AI capabilities. Previously an opt-in feature, Apple Intelligence is now automatically enabled on supported devices, simplifying the user experience and promoting wider adoption.
Among the new functionalities is Visual Intelligence, which enables users to add events directly to their Calendar app from images like posters or flyers. The update also includes tools for identifying plants and animals. Mac users will benefit from Genmoji support and similar adjustments to notification summaries.
Refined Notification Summaries
iOS 18.3 introduces a visual change to notification summaries, which will now be displayed in italics to differentiate them from regular notifications. New settings accessible directly from the lock screen allow users to manage these summaries more easily.
Apple’s phased rollout of its AI features is designed to assess server capacity and ensure a smooth integration process. Currently, Apple Intelligence remains in beta and is limited to select English-speaking regions.

Users can download the iOS 18.3 update now by navigating to Settings > General > Software Update on their compatible devices.
